Well, COP28 ended pretty much as one would have predicted, given the conference was chaired by a oil company executive, from an utterly oil dependent country, and there were more than 2,400 oil and gas lobbyists hovering over the conference like vultures. What we see as the takeaway is that the oil producing countries and corporations have condemned the earth’s ecosystems to disaster. The one bit of good news is that coal didn’t do as well, and the U.S. took the appropriate “phase out” position. But in general greed triumphs over wellbeing once again.

The latest iteration of negotiating text at this year’s global climate summit has dropped a previous version’s suggestion of a phaseout of fossil fuels.

Instead, the latest draft text, introduced Monday, calls for “reducing” consumption and production of fossil fuels “in a just, orderly and equitable manner.”

A group of 80 countries, including the U.S., small island nations and the European Union, have reportedly called for a “phase out” of fossil fuels. 

But official decisions have to be adopted unanimously by the nearly 200 countries at the COP28 climate summit. News outlets reported last week that the head of a group of oil-producing countries known as OPEC wrote to its members urging them to oppose language that targets fossil fuels. 

In addition to its call to reduce such fuels, the latest text calls for the rapid phasedown of unabated coal — that is, coal whose emissions are not prevented through carbon capture technology. […]

    There is not putting the fossil fuel protest movement back in the box!. In fact, it has been gaining in speed and numbers. I believe we are go see more movement. More creative protests.The energy around it continues to build.

    In addition, Some years a go, there was plan for solar in Saudi Arabia that would have been shipped to Europe for starters..I believe we are going to see more movement, more installation of alternative energy and fairly quickly. The potential for profit will only increase.
