Stephan: The bad news comes in almost daily, but the corporate world seems to be incapable of dealing with its greed addiction, and since corruption is so rampant politicians just stand around spewing nonsense. Even worse about a third of the United States population routinely vote against their own wellbeing, so the politicians are not held to account.

The world’s oceans have been warming for generations, a trend that is accelerating and threatens to fuel more supercharged storms, devastate marine ecosystems and upend the lives and livelihoods of millions of people, according to a new scientific analysis.
Published this week in the journal Nature Reviews, it finds that the upper reaches of the oceans — roughly the top 2,000 meters, or just over a mile — have been heating up around the planet since at least the 1950s, with the most stark changes observed in the Atlantic and Southern oceans.

Stephan: I have been telling you for more than two decades that water is destiny, whether it is too much from sea rise, or too little from drought both caused by climate change. A large percentage of the American population lives in an area that is being affected by one or the other of these two trends. So we are going to see millions of these people becoming internal migrants. All those people voting for Republicans just don't seem capable of understanding that the Republican Party is not interested in any of this. Many don't even believe climate change is real.

A study published Friday revealed that heatwaves fueled by human-caused climate change have cost the global economy trillions of dollars over the past 30 years, with the world’s poorest countries—and those least responsible for the climate emergency—bearing a disproportionate share of the burden.
“The regions with the lowest incomes globally are the ones that suffer most from these extreme heat events.”
The study, published in Science Advances, reached three key conclusions. First, “increased extreme heat intensity significantly decreases economic growth in relatively warm tropical regions and weakly affects it in relatively cool midlatitude regions.” Second, “anthropogenic climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of these economically consequential heat extremes.” Therefore—and thirdly—”the effects of climate change on extreme heat have amplified underlying inequality, disproportionately harming low-income, low-emitting regions, with major emitters shouldering primary responsibility for billions of dollars of losses in the tropics.”

New polling finds that nearly half of Americans think the U.S. should be a Christian nation — and that, among those who believe as such, over half think that the word of the Bible should take precedence over the will of the public when it comes to writing laws.
The research, by Pew Research Center, finds that 45 percent of adults surveyed say that the U.S. should be a Christian nation, while 51 percent disagree. While two-thirds of Americans say that churches and other houses of worship should stay out of government affairs, there is still a sizable — and perhaps alarming — amount of Americans who believe that Christianity should guide U.S. law, the polling found.

Stephan: In a world in which profit is the only priority, the death of thousands of humans is just an unfortunate cost of corporate business. And here is the proof of that statement.
How to respond to this greed? Never, ever, buy any product made by Syngenta. Take the trouble to look up what they make and sell. Tell your family and friends to never buy anything this corporation makes and sells.
For decades, Swiss chemical giant Syngenta has manufactured and marketed a widely used weed killing chemical called paraquat, and for much of that time the company has been dealing with external concerns that long-term exposure to the chemical may cause the dreaded, incurable brain ailment known as Parkinson’s disease.
Syngenta has repeatedly told customers and regulators that scientific research does not prove a connection between its weed killer and the disease, insisting that the chemical does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, and does not affect brain cells in ways that cause Parkinson’s.
But a cache of internal corporate documents dating back to the 1950s obtained by The New Lede in a reporting collaboration with the Guardian suggests that the public narrative put forward by Syngenta and the corporate entities that preceded it has at times contradicted the company’s own research and knowledge.
