I want to thank all of the SR readers who wrote to comment on the President’s use of the term addication in reference to our attitude towards petroleum. It is true this has been the position of SR for the past seven years. But, no, I have no reason to believe that my writing played any role in the decision of the speechwriters to use the term in the State of the Union. Instead, I think it is becoming unavoidably obvious that addiction is a useful way to conceptualize our dependency on this energy source. — Stephan
